Toad In The Hole.

A quick Google search tells me that the origins of Toad in the Hole's name are unknown, but it can only be guessed that at some point, somebody thought that sausages in a great big Yorkshire pudding resembled a toad sticking it's head out of a hole.

I'm not seeing any toads...

Despite it's strange name, Toad in the Hole is a really delicious comfort food for cold evenings like this and my kids love it!

Today I had Remy with me in the kitchen, giving me lots of help, and she was a little disappointed that there wasn't more work for her to do, as this is such a quick and easy meal to make.

We served this up with mashed potatoes, broccoli and lots of onion gravy, delicious!

  • 8 sausages of your choice (we choose Quorn meatless sausages.)
  • 1 large white onion (chopped.)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3-4 sprigs of fresh rosemary
  • 110g plain flour
  • 2 medium free range eggs
  • 300mls milk
  • salt & pepper
  1. Preheat oven to 220 degrees C
  2. Fry up sausages and onion together in oil until cooked through and browned.
  3. Sieve flour into a mixing bowl, make a well in middle and add eggs.
  4. Whisk in milk gradually until mixture is combined  has a pancake batter consistency, add salt and pepper to preference.
  5. Spread the sausages and onion evenly in large baking dish.
  6. Pour in batter, lay rosemary sprigs on top.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until risen, and golden brown on top.
  8. Enjoy with lots of onion gravy!
